What happens at a custom golf club fitting?

A custom golf club fitting is a one-to-one session where a fitter matches clubs to your swing using launch monitor data.

GOLF FITTING

The custom fitting process

Step 1: Getting to know your game
Every fitting starts with a conversation. Your fitter will ask about your handicap, how often you play, the shots you struggle with and what you want from your clubs as well as other sports you play and any physical limitations you may have. This shapes everything that follows, because a fitting is built around you, not around a product we want to sell.

Step 2: Assessing your current clubs
Next we look at the clubs you play now and measure them. This gives us a clear picture of what you are used to and, just as importantly, a baseline to measure any improvement against. It is how we can prove whether a change is genuinely better, rather than just different.

Step 3: Establishing a baseline on the launch monitor
You will hit a series of shots with your own clubs on TrackMan. This captures your club speed, ball speed, swing path, launch angle, spin rate, carry/total distance and dispersion (amongst other things!). These numbers are the starting point. From here, every change we test is measured against your own data, so the comparison is honest.

Step 4: Finding your best fit
This is the fitting itself. Your fitter will work through different head and shaft combinations, adjusting loft, lie, length and weight, and testing each against your baseline. Because we are brand agnostic, you can try options from every major manufacturer. The data does the talking, and we keep going until we find the combination that gives you the best strike, consistency and ball flight.

Step 5: Your recommendation
At the end you receive a clear recommendation, backed by the numbers from your session, so you can see exactly why each choice was made. There is also no pressure and no obligation to buy, so if your current clubs are already a good fit, we will tell you and won’t recommend upgrading.

Step 6: Build and collection
If you go ahead, your clubs are hand-built to your exact specifications and checked to make sure they are the perfect fit for you. This build quality is just as important as the fitting and a key part of why fitted clubs perform the way they do on the course.

How long does a custom fitting take?

The session length depends on how much of your bag you are fitting. A single club is around an hour, a driver or woods fitting about an hour and a half, irons around two hours, and a full bag fitting around three and a half hours. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing page.

How to prepare for your fitting

  • Bring your current clubs, so we can measure them and set a baseline.
  • Wear your normal golf shoes and bring a glove, so your setup matches how you actually play.
  • Warm up if you can, so your swing on the day is representative.
  • Come with an idea of what you want to improve, but an open mind on how to get there.

Are custom golf clubs worth it?

FAQs

Do I need to be a good golfer to get fitted?

No. Golfers of every ability are fitted, from beginners to low handicappers. If anything, the benefit is often greater for mid and higher handicappers, because their current clubs are more likely to be working against them.

Is a launch monitor used in a golf fitting?

Yes. We use TrackMan to measure your swing and ball flight, capturing data such as launch angle, spin rate, ball speed and dispersion. This is how we establish a baseline and show whether a change actually improves your result, rather than relying on feel alone.

Can I be fitted for just one club?

Yes. You can fit a single category, such as a driver, irons, wedges or a putter, or the full bag. Many golfers start with the club they most want to improve and build from there.

Do I have to buy clubs at a fitting?

No. The fitting is a standalone service. You leave with a clear recommendation and the data behind it. If you decide to go ahead, we build your clubs to the agreed specifications. There is no obligation to buy on the day.

What should I bring to a golf club fitting?

Bring your current clubs, your usual golf shoes and a glove. Your current clubs matter because they give the fitter a baseline to measure any improvement against. If you are being fitted for part of your bag, bring at least the clubs from that category.

Do I get the golf fitting fee back if I buy clubs?

This varies by fitter. Some retailers credit the fitting fee against a purchase. Others, including specialist independents, treat the fitting as a separate professional service with its own value. At Precision Golf the fitting fee covers the session, so it is worth checking what is included before you book.
