It’s a fact, no online club fitting tool or software can determine the suitability of a shaft and sadly there is no such thing as “The Best Shaft on the Market” . The best performing shaft for one person could be the worst match for another. But it’s not all bad news, help is at hand!
Club fitting is far more of an art form than an exact science and as a result there is no substitute for an experienced club-fitter with a sound product knowledge and well-trained eye to identify the causes of ill-fitting equipment. This allows our fitters to make independent and impartial remedial recommendations, to re-shaft existing heads or to build an entirely new club or set. A good club fitter knows exactly how to influence your launch monitor data by selecting shafts within their armoury for particular playing characteristics to optimise your ball flight and cater for your preferences on shot shape and feel.
However, the accuracy and quality of the resultant club build is of equal importance, so it’s best left to the experts. To try and do so yourself would be much like trying to recreate your favourite meal from a restaurant by buying all the ingredients but without a recipe. It’ll never be the same and you can’t blame the chef if it doesn’t taste the same !
Have you ever been to a fitting day and the club delivered following the fitting just doesn’t seem to feel or perform like the demo you tried on the day?
When a club-fitting studio and workshop are not all under the same roof, there are can be discrepancies in machine calibration that may result in equipment being built ever so slightly differently to the agreed specs causing them to underperform. There may also be circumstances when a club builder may need to speak with a fitter to optimise a specification based on the components they’re working with. At Precision Golf we undertake all fitting and building under one roof and this allows us to take full responsibility for the performance of every club we build. We are also able to build to much tighter tolerances than manufacturers and we also incorporate SSTPURE shaft alignment technology into every club we build.
When it comes to shaft fitting, the number one cause and effect of ill-fitting equipment is shaft weight which will directly impact on your swing linkage and timing. This is often overlooked, and golfers unknowingly think that flex has far greater impact on performance. In reality, and for a golfer of any ability, if you select a shaft who’s weight is too heavy or too light by as little as 5 grams, flex is largely irrelevant as the weight of the shaft will dictate and override performance. Have you ever been to a range or a shop with a practise net, and people asking to demo clubs. Normally people would ask to test for loft and flex for a driver and length and flex for irons. Rarely would you hear someone asking for a driver, or 6iron, with a shaft of a particular weight. Not only that but the head is then taped up to protect it with probably 10grams of masking tape to protect the sole, face and crown. The effect that also will have on the balance of the club is tremendous and it is not possible to accurately gauge the performance of a club you intend on purchasing this way as you’re playing a lottery.
Don’t leave anything to chance and let us help you play better golf.
Once you have arrived at the Precision Golf Studio and met your club-fitter, the session will start with analysis of your current equipment in one of our five fitting bays. This will involve taking several measurements such as length, loft & lie angles, swing weight, total weight and shaft CPM. It is at this time you will be asked about your likes/dislikes of your current set, any favourite clubs, what issues you would like to overcome and your main objectives for the session.
You will then be asked to warm up by hitting some practice balls in the bay. Please use this opportunity to let your fitter know of any previous or current injuries or issues we might need to be aware of. After you’re warmed up we will switch to your preferred golf ball and start capturing data with one of our TrackMan 4 launch monitors.
Once we have an array of data from your current clubs we will talk through the numbers with you, explain what they mean and how they tie into the performance you see on the course. If the equipment you have is performing well, we will show you why and explain why no change is needed. If anything this could purely give you the confidence of knowing your clubs are set up correctly and in a game of confidence, this can have a dramatic effect.
Sometimes the equipment that you have may be performing reasonably well, and only slight work may be needed to optimise. For example ,changing length, loft/lie angles, grip size or swing weight. In this instance we would normally arrange a date for you to drop the clubs in to the studio and leave with us for an agreed time so that work can be completed. There are instances when light remedial work can be carried out at the time of the appointment. If however there is an early indication of ill-fitting equipment where it may not be possible to use existing club heads, this will be discussed and we will move on to testing of new product.
It is then our job to use the enormous range of head and shaft combinations to gain efficiency and improve distance, dispersion and consistency. Precision Golf is brand agnostic and we do not favour any one make over another. None of our club-fitting staff work on a commission basis and we purely sell performance. Our fitters are respectful of budget and mindful of preferences on brand, looks and feel. We use this criteria along with data provided by TrackMan to find you the right combination of equipment that will help you play better golf.
We appreciate that we are generally more expensive than off the shelf or online and there are many reasons for this. Firstly, many of the 100’s of shafts we have are of higher quality materials and tolerances than you will find in off the shelf equipment which carries a premium price. Secondly ,it is the build quality and accuracy that you are paying for. All equipment supplied at Precision Golf is built by one of our three master club builders whom have built equipment for some the best players in the world, and to the highest tolerances in the industry. Here not only are you being fit in the most comprehensive way, you get exactly what you need and paid for!
If you decide to proceed with any of our recommendations, we would take full payment on the day of your appointment and release your order into production. We quote a lead time of four weeks to fulfil orders as parts are supplied from all over the world. We also have a continuous stream of ongoing builds that must follow a build queue. Our team will contact customers to let them know clubs are complete or if there are any component delays. Clubs can either be collected from the Precision Golf Studio or shipped to your address. If you collect from the Studio, we offer a complimentary appointment lasting 45 minutes, allowing you to hit your clubs and have your fitter check lie angles to ensure that your new clubs perform optimally.
